OCTOBER
2009 SCOPE MONTH
QUIET ACHIEVER AWARD MONTH
Mrs.
Betty Chandler of Lennox Head,
a small village just north of Ballina was born in Mullumbimby,
lived most of her married life in Lismore. After the death of
her husband Betty moved to Lennox Head. Betty has always been
very involved in her local Catholic Church but she wanted to
become more involved in the Community.
Much
of Betty’s community work is done quietly outside her
involvement with the church. She volunteers to drive the elderly
Lennox Head residents to medical appointments in Lismore or
to Ballina for shopping. She has been president of the Lennox
Head St Vincent de Paul Society for 15 years and has, with others,
ensured the Op shop was always open for the needy in the community.
As a St. Vincent de Paul counsellor, Betty offers support to
many. She is renowned for her hugs and her sponge cakes –
it’s not uncommon for her to deliver as many as three
sponge cakes a week to locals celebrating a birthday. We considered
Betty to be very deserving of our Award for her tireless work
in her Community and along with the Award we presented her with
a cheque for $300.00.
Our
Award night was held at the Lennox Head Bowling & Sports
Club and was very well attended and included the Mayor of Ballina
Mr. Phil Silver, parishioners of the local Catholic Church,
personal and community friends of Betty’s. Light refreshments,
punch, tea coffee were provided by the Bowling Club and our
club provided a congratulatory cake. The evening was a tremendous
success enjoyed by all.
