Scope is an Australian Women’s Service Club – similar to other Service Clubs eg Lioness, Lions, Apex, Rotary, Inner Wheel, however Scope is a Club founded in Australia. Most Club’s are in Queensland but we do have one Club in Ballina NSW. Our current National President, Janet Hansen, is from our Cairns Club.

Fund Raising History
Scope Members claim that they put the FUN into fundraising. Over the 30 years we have raised many thousands of dollars for local Cairns organisations. Together with Edmonton Lions Club we instigated the annual Edmonton Carols by Candlelight and this continues to grow in popularity with proceeds being donated to the Cairns Council Christmas Appeal. We also work with the Edmonton Lions Club to facilitate activities for the Council when Edmonton area hosts the Australia Day activities.

Fund Raising Activities
Recently we have been raising funds for the purchase of barbecue and outdoor tables for the young person’s residential care with St John’s at Gordonvale. This fundraising continues. We are long time supporters of Cairns Red Cross, both financially and with hands on assistance. Members assist with the Cairns Show stall and with Emergency and Disaster Relief and attend training sessions. Donations have also been made to Gordonvale Palliative Care (Sunbird Lodge), Suicide Prevention and Bereavement support, Hospital Foundation, Hear and Say Centre, Angel Flight, Cord Blood

In June 2009 The Cairns Club will host their 4th National Conference. "This will be the 32nd Annual Scope National Conference."
We are looking for guest speakers for the Sunday morning session and would be very interested to know of groups/speakers that would be prepared to speak for half an hour or so on their subject which would be of general interest to women. We expect approximately 50 delegates. Please phone Fran on 0407 695 891
We are also looking to the Business community for any Corporate financial support they might be able to offer our Club to assist with Conference expenses.

New Members are always welcome and we meet at 7.30 pm on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at the Cairns Red Cross Centre Lake Street.

SCOPE CLUB – QUIET ACHIEVER 2008
MARGARET BARBOUR

The Scope Club of Cairns Inc recently awarded one of its own tireless volunteers its Scope Quiet Achiever Award for 2008. In receiving this Annual Scope Quiet Achiever Award , Margaret joins other proud local recipients such as Harald Falge, Stan Jensen, Glenys Duncombe, Pat Moloney,Barbara Campbell, Robin Anderson, Arthur Strike and Pat Gosper, to name but a few.

Margaret has recently served 2 years as the Club President and joined Scope in 2000.
She has been a very active and valued member of our Club. With Margaret leading the charge with our Cent Sales we now rank this as our most successful fundraising function. The Cent Sale conducted in October raised $5000 and this money is all returned to a variety of charities in our local area.

Margaret donates many hours to other Charities and Groups. Among these is Ruth’s Bookshop in Grafton Street., Lifeline’s Community Visitors Scheme where she visits people in Aged Care Homes who don’t get regular visitors, RSL Care helping veterans by taking them shopping or to doctors or she just visits them.
Additionally she calls Hoy at Farnora Nursing Home, and is always helping other groups Edmonton Aqua Boomers, Lioness Club etc with their Cent Sale fundraisers.

Margaret is a Cairns local and her first job after she left School was with The Cairns Post. She later joined the Air force and served for 6 years Tottenham (Vic), Amberley (Qld) and Regents Park (NSW). During this time she rose quickly to the ranks of Sergeant. She also worked in Lae and Rabaul (PNG). After her marriage to well known local Don Barbour she worked for many years with Telstra until her retirement in 2002.Margaret and Don have two children Andrew and Louise who both live locally.
